About this program
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service funds orangutan and gibbon conservation programs through the Orangutan and Gibbon Conservation Fund (CFDA 15.689), a program established in FY25 that supports field conservation activities, habitat protection, and CITES Secretariat operations in countries where great ape populations are located.
The program funds direct conservation and protection work on orangutans and gibbons, including habitat preservation, population monitoring, anti-poaching efforts, community engagement, and capacity building in range countries. Eligible applicants include any entity with demonstrated conservation experience with these species—research institutions, conservation nonprofits, government wildlife agencies, and individuals working on orangutan and gibbon protection. Recipients may pursue renewal funding for previously supported projects, though these requests undergo competitive review and are treated as new awards rather than amendments.
No recent grant award portfolio data is available in the source material; the program was established in FY25, and prior awards were reported under CFDA 15.689's predecessor listing (15.629). The source does not specify the typical award magnitude, total program funding, award cadence, or recent grant opportunities. Funding is obligated at the start of the period of performance and must be spent within 90 days of the end date; non-Federal entities expending one million dollars or more annually in Federal awards are subject to single audits under 2 CFR 200.
The source indicates that proposals undergo competitive review based on criteria articulated in the Notice of Funding Opportunity, though no specific NOFO or application due date is present. Interested applicants should contact the Fish and Wildlife Service directly for current solicitation status, award history under the new CFDA number, typical funding levels, and submission deadlines.

- Use restrictions
Funds may not be used for the following activities: Physical resettlement of people (voluntary or involuntary); the purchase of firearms or ammunition; gathering information by persons who conceal their true identity; buying or purchasing intelligence; evidence or information or paying informants; law enforcement operations that, to arrest suspects, prompt them to carry out illegal activities; and any activity that would circumvent sanctions, laws, or regulations of wither the U.S. or the country of the proposed activity. How to apply
- Criteria for selecting proposals
Proposals will be reviewed based on criteria identified in the Notice of Funding Opportunity.
- Award procedure
Projects are reviewed and competitively selected for funding using criteria articulated in the Notice of Funding Opportunity. Review criteria can be found in the application information. Once a proposal has been selected for funding, an approving official executes an Assistance Award between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Recipient.
- Renewals
Recipients may request funding for a subsequent year/cycle of a currently funded project. However, these requests are subject to the same submission, review, and approval requirements as all new applications. This program will fund any approved renewal application as new award, not as an amendment to an existing award.
