About this program
The Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs and Indian Education funds supplemental social services grants through the Tiwahe Demonstration Project (CFDA 15.166), which supports tribal efforts to address foster care involvement, substance abuse, domestic violence, poverty, homelessness, and suicide within tribal communities.
The program supports coordination of family and social services delivery across tribal, local, county, state, and federal agencies and justice systems. Funded activities include increasing access to family and social services; creating alternatives to incarceration through solution-focused sentencing options; improving prevention, intervention, and treatment linkages; strengthening case management; and enhancing partnerships to serve tribal children, youth, and families. Tiwahe Social Services funding supplements existing tribal social services programs rather than serving as direct payment to a tribal social services agency.
The source does not provide grant award portfolio data, recent award examples, award economics, award cadence, typical award magnitudes, or information about recent or open grant opportunities. Without this data, the current activity level, funding concentration, assistance-type mix, and competitive timing cannot be assessed from the source. The source confirms that only designated Tiwahe Demonstration Sites are eligible for funding under this program.
To evaluate whether to pursue this program, you will need to access the most recent CFDA listing update, the Bureau of Indian Affairs grants portal, or the most recent Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to determine whether the program is actively soliciting applications, what the funding envelope and award magnitudes are, what sites are currently designated as eligible, and what the application timeline is. The program's restriction to designated demonstration sites also requires confirmation of whether your organization's tribal service area qualifies under the current cohort.
