About this program
The Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs and Indian Education funds operating costs and student support services at two federally operated postsecondary institutions serving American Indian and Alaska Native students, CFDA 15.058, with annual application deadlines set by each institution (Haskell Indian Nations University: June 30 for fall semester, November 15 for spring semester; Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institution: September 1 for fall trimester, December 29 for spring trimester, May 5 for summer trimester).
This program provides direct institutional funding to Haskell Indian Nations University and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institution to cover administrative staff, instructional personnel, dormitory operations, supplies, materials, textbooks, food service, and student support including residential life, athletics, and academic services. Student fees are structured by residency and enrollment status: Haskell charges $215 per semester for residential full-time students (housing, activities, textbooks) and $110 for off-campus students; SIPI charges $280 for residential full-time students, $225 for commuter full-time students, and $150 for commuter part-time students. Both institutions may increase fees periodically. The program serves only American Indian and Alaska Native students from federally recognized Indian tribes nationwide.
Funding is allocated annually based on the number of eligible Indian students enrolled at each institution. Individual student financial assistance grants are determined by certified financial aid requirements established under the Department of Education's Student Financial Assistance programs. Both institutions admit all applicants meeting eligibility criteria and demonstrating ability to benefit from postsecondary education, to the extent space permits. Applicants must submit official high school transcripts, transcripts from other institutions attended, or a GED certificate. Admissions committees at each institution review applications and notify applicants within four weeks of submitting a completed application packet. Awards are made on an annual basis with funds remaining available until expended.
This is an institutional support program rather than a competitive grant opportunity for external applicants. The source does not provide recent award history, portfolio data, or information on current funding levels.
