About this program
The Department of the Interior Bureau of Ocean Energy Management funds training and work opportunities for Alaska Native youth through the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program (CFDA 15.013), with the most recent grant award issued on January 11, 2022.
Program activity is sparse and episodic. One cooperative agreement for $247 thousand was awarded in 2022 to support the ANSEP partnership with BOEM through September 30, 2026. The portfolio shows no additional recent awards; the last posted opportunity closed on July 8, 2021. No current solicitation appears open, and no upcoming application deadline is specified in the source.
The program funds classroom and on-the-job training for Alaska Native youth aged 16 to 25 in energy exploration, petroleum engineering, geology, geophysics, and environmental science as applied to U.S. Outer Continental Shelf oil, gas, and marine mineral development. Funding supports ANSEP participants enrolled in or accepted to engineering degree or certificate programs, provided they maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and have completed or are enrolled in at least one engineering course. Training emphasizes practical understanding of energy production techniques, stewardship of OCS resources, and environmental and economic considerations in resource development.
Assistance is provided entirely through cooperative agreements. The sole funding source is the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, which obligated $247 thousand across the one tracked award.
Eligible applicants include federally recognized Indian tribal governments, institutions of higher education, state and local governments, and federal agencies. Youth participant selection is based on ANSEP participation status, academic standing, engineering coursework, communication skills, and alignment with BOEM mission needs. The program anticipates selections could occur through fiscal year 2025, though the current funding status and next solicitation timing are not specified. Previously approved and funded projects may be renewed in subsequent years if permitted by the relevant NOFO.
