About this program

The Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control funds lead hazard control capacity building grants (CFDA 14.912) with an application deadline of March 10, 2026.

The program funds infrastructure development in states, federally recognized Native American Tribes with EPA-authorized lead abatement certification programs, cities, counties, and other local government units that have not received direct HUD lead hazard control grants or are previous grantees with demonstrated capacity rebuilding needs. Eligible applicants may be jurisdictions that have lost experienced staff or experienced other factors degrading their ability to undertake comprehensive lead hazard identification and control programs. Current grantees with active periods of performance are ineligible. Funded activities include building local capacity to determine childhood lead poisoning prevalence in children under six years; establishing lead-safe work practices in lead hazard control, renovation, remodeling, and maintenance activities; developing program intake procedures and systems to affirmatively market lead-safe units to families with young children; hiring qualified program staff; fostering collaboration and data sharing between health and housing departments; and establishing partnerships with faith-based organizations, health departments, and community-based organizations. The program also supports integration of lead hazard control into existing housing repair programs targeting eligible privately owned rental and owner-occupied housing.

Funding is delivered exclusively through Cooperative Agreements. Applicant types include state governments, tribal governments, city and township governments, county governments, special district governments, and other entities.

The program has posted grant opportunities consistently, with solicitations in January 2026 (FR-6900-N-31, due March 10, 2026), July 2024 (FR-6800-N-31), and April 2023 (FR-6600-N-31). The 2026 NOFO was updated to correct formatting in the Rating Factor charts and extended the deadline from March 5 to March 10 to avoid a Monday due date. The source contains no portfolio block with award counts, dollar totals, or recent award examples, and no grant awards are documented in the source material.
