About this program
The Department of Commerce Office of the Secretary administers the Internship Program for Postsecondary Students (CFDA 11.702), which funds experiential learning opportunities for college students—including undergraduates, graduate students, and law students—pursuing federal employment pathways; the program's most recent grant award was disbursed on January 1, 2009, making it inactive for the past 17 years.
This program has not posted grant opportunities or disbursed new awards since 2009. The portfolio reflects 16 total awards spanning 2001 to 2009, with activity concentrated in 2005 (5 awards) and 2001 (5 awards), and a steep decline thereafter (2 awards in 2004, 3 in 2008, 1 in 2009). No current solicitations or grant opportunities are open.
The program funded internship cohorts across multiple sessions (summer, fall, spring) at accredited postsecondary institutions, with awards supporting undergraduate and graduate intern placements at Department of Commerce facilities. Award descriptions reference cohort sizes ranging from single digits to 31 interns per session per award, with multi-year funding structures common. Recent representative awards include Cooperative Agreement 6008792001 ($4.2 million obligated, January 2009, supporting eight interns for spring 2009), Cooperative Agreement 6008792003 ($1.6 million, August 2008, extending fall 2008 sessions), and Cooperative Agreement 6005792002 ($1.5 million, March 2005, providing funding for 31 summer interns plus fall and spring cohorts). The program structure required cooperative agreements between the Department and host institutions to manage intern placements and stipends.
Funding is concentrated entirely within the Department of Commerce Office of the Secretary, which obligated $15.1 million across 16 awards. The assistance-type mix is predominantly Cooperative Agreements (94 percent, 15 awards) with a single Project Grant (6 percent). Combined federal and total obligated dollars are identical at $15.1 million, indicating no recipient cost-sharing or matching requirements.
Given the 17-year funding gap and absence of recent solicitations, this program should be marked inactive unless Department of Commerce resumes operations under this Assistance Listing.
