About this program

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), under the Department of Commerce, funds fellowships through the Science and Technology Fellowship Program (CFDA 11.091) that support highly qualified scientists and engineers conducting research in advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, physics, bioscience, chemistry, materials science, information technology, standards development, and technology transfer to strengthen U.S. competitiveness and economic resilience.

The program supports fellowship recipients who establish and manage a NIST Science and Technology Fellowship Program cultivating the next generation of scientific and technical leaders. Eligible applicants include accredited institutions of higher education, non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations incorporated in the United States, and state, local, territorial, and Indian tribal governments. Individuals and unincorporated sole proprietors are not eligible. Federal entities may participate as unfunded collaborators but cannot receive funding. Awards may be eligible for renewal in accordance with DOC Financial Assistance General Terms and Conditions.

Selection is merit-based and evaluated on rationality of execution (innovation and creativity of project approach), qualifications of personnel, resources availability, and match of budget to proposed work. NIST reserves the right to negotiate budget costs with selected applicants, request modification of objectives or work plans, or reject applications where information raises reasonable doubt about applicant responsibility.
