About this program
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) administers the Species Recovery Grant Program (CFDA 11.064) to fund management, research, monitoring, and outreach activities that directly benefit endangered and threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, with a current solicitation due June 20, 2026. The program also supports activities for recently delisted species, proposed species, and candidate species.
Funding is available through both grants and cooperative agreements. Grant opportunities are posted regularly; the most recent solicitation (NOAA-NMFS-PRPO-2026-31825) targets state agencies with existing or pending section 6(c) agreements with NOAA Fisheries' Regional Program Office. The application review window typically runs up to 180 calendar days from receipt of a complete application, though timelines may extend beyond that.
The program funds concrete conservation activities including management effort development and implementation, scientific research addressing priority actions in ESA Recovery Plans or Recovery Outlines, and public education and outreach. The current solicitation excludes Pacific salmonid proposals (routed instead to the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund) and marine mammal stranding response and rehabilitation activities (handled through the John H. Prescott Marine Mammal Rescue Assistance Grant Program).
Eligible applicants are state agencies that have entered into section 6(c) agreements with NOAA Fisheries within 30 days of the proposal deadline and federally recognized tribes or tribal organizations with delegated ESA authority. No formal appeal process exists; if an application is unacceptable, the funding agency states reasons in writing and invites revision. Awards cannot be renewed but may be extended through amendment requests. Recipients must retain grant-related records for three years from final financial report submission.
The source does not provide recent grant award data, assistance-type distribution percentages, typical award magnitudes, or a history of disbursement activity. The source does not identify competing funding agencies within the program.
