About this program
The Department of Agriculture Forest Service awards cooperative agreements under the Youth Conservation Corps and Public Lands Corps program (CFDA 10.740) to fund paid work experience and conservation training for young people ages 15–30, or up to 35 for veterans, on public lands.
The program partners with nonprofit organizations, state and local governments, and Indian Tribe governing bodies to operate conservation projects. Youth Conservation Corps projects run for one to three months during summer and serve participants ages 15–18. Public Lands Corps projects last a minimum of four months and serve participants ages 16–30 (up to 35 for veterans); Public Lands Corps participants who complete 640 hours earn non-competitive federal hiring authority. Partners must provide meaningful, full-time work in natural and cultural resource settings, a range of education and life skills training, citizenship development through service, and a living allowance, stipend, or wages to participants. All participants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents; Youth Conservation Corps participants must have valid Social Security Numbers and state work permits; Public Lands Corps participants must hold a high school diploma or GED.
Funded activities include trail maintenance and construction, wildfire risk mitigation and fuels reduction, prescribed burning, wildlife habitat restoration, reforestation, tree planting, seed collection, mapping and geographic information systems work, forest conservation education, and visitor services and outreach. Award determinations occur at regional, station, and national levels within the Forest Service, with each award documented through executed agreements, comprehensive financial plans, and detailed scopes of work.
