About this program

The Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service (CFDA 10.590) distributed Disaster Relief Appropriations Act emergency food assistance funding to states for Hurricane Sandy response costs through October 29, 2012, and has not awarded grants under this program since that date.

The program funded processing, storage, and distribution costs incurred by state agencies and local organizations including soup kitchens, food banks, food pantries, and faith-based organizations responding to Hurricane Sandy impacts on low-income populations. All four awards issued in 2012 were Formula Grants with combined federal obligations of $1.1 million. The Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service was the sole funding source for all awards.

Award magnitudes varied substantially. New Jersey received $500,000 for Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program disaster administration costs. New York received $585,255 for the same purpose. Maryland received $4,405 and Pennsylvania received $7,163, reflecting state-specific administrative needs or population impacts.

All four grants completed on September 30, 2013, concluding the program's active funding cycle. No recent grant opportunities have been posted. This program is no longer active — it was a time-limited appropriations vehicle responding to a specific disaster event in 2012. Organizations should not expect new solicitations or awards under this Assistance Listing.
