About this program

The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) funds international agricultural research, extension, and teaching activities under Assistance Listing 10.305, with the most recent award disbursed on March 1, 2012. This program is no longer active—the award cadence dropped sharply after 2010 (36 awards in 2008, declining to 2 awards by 2012), and no grant opportunities have been posted in at least fourteen years.

The program historically supported collaborative projects that enhanced the international capabilities of U.S. colleges and universities. Funded activities included international research partnerships, curriculum internationalization, faculty and student exchanges, and extension work in global agricultural contexts. Representative recent awards funded bilateral research and education initiatives such as US-China partnerships on season extension production and marketing ($88,905, March 2012), agricultural partnerships with Brazil on food security and bioenergy ($150,000, September 2011), US-India bioenergy collaboration ($149,801, September 2011), and US-Costa Rica forestry education and research cooperation ($148,904, September 2011). Other awards addressed climate adaptation in agriculture, food safety research, dairy system sustainability across national borders, and workforce development through global agricultural exposure.

NIFA was the exclusive funding agency for all 151 awards issued under the program, obligating $12.2 million in combined federal dollars from 2005 through 2012. All awards were structured as Project Grants with five-year maximum performance periods. Typical award values clustered around $150,000, though some awards included negative obligations reflecting cost adjustments or closeouts. Eligible applicants were accredited public and nonprofit colleges and universities. Applications underwent merit review by panels of qualified scientists and specialists, with award decisions made by the NIFA Authorized Departmental Officer within 30 to 180 days of submission. No grant opportunities are currently posted under this assistance listing, and no recent funding activity is evident in the available records.
