About this program
The USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Division of Youth and 4-H administers the 4-H Military Extension Educator Program (CFDA 10.277) in partnership with the Department of Defense to support military children, youth, and families on military installations worldwide and in communities housing National Guard and Reserve families. NOFOs are published annually, and specific application deadlines should be confirmed with the National Program Leader.
The program funds 4-H Extension professionals who develop and deliver youth development programming on military installations globally and in civilian communities. Funded activities range from 4-H Clubs to professional development for military staff, with an explicit focus on infusing youth development practices that contribute to military mission-readiness. Grant funds support integrated research, extension, and education objectives addressing food and agricultural sciences in the broadest sense.
The source does not provide recent grant award data, award counts, funding concentration among agencies, typical award magnitudes, or information about currently open grant opportunities. The program is jointly administered by NIFA and the DoD Office of Military Community and Family Policy, with involvement from Army, Navy, and Air Force partnerships.
Allowable costs support personnel, program delivery, and direct project expenses necessary to conduct approved objectives. Grants do not support building renovation, fixed equipment installation, facility construction or acquisition, tuition remission, or unapproved purposes. For most extension programs under this authority, indirect costs are not allowable and matching is not required, though applicants should confirm current restrictions in the NOFO. Applications undergo peer and merit review by qualified scientists and extension specialists. Grant records must be maintained for at least three years and are subject to inspection during the grant life.
