Eligible costs include personal services, fringe benefits, contractual services, travel from normal work location to project sites, equipment purchases and rentals under $5,000 per unit, tree inventory software subscriptions for up to four years, and other direct implementation expenses, while ineligible costs include indirect/overhead expenses, salary for non-project time, home-to-work travel, and funding from other state or federal sources. Approximately $10 million in total funding is available for Round 17, sourced from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund, with up to $3 million designated as a set-aside for communities with populations smaller than 65,000 people to ensure equitable distribution of resources. Individual grant awards range from a minimum of $50,000 to a maximum of $2,500,000 with no match requirements required from applicants. This is a reimbursement-based grant program requiring awardees to pay project costs upfront before receiving reimbursement from DEC; however, not-for-profit entities may request advance payments of up to 25% once a contract is fully approved by applicable State agencies. Not-for-profit applicants must be prequalified in the SFS Grants Management System by the application due date, with prequalification applications requiring five days for state review. Awards are anticipated by October 2026, with DEC reserving the right to modify project scale based on funding availability.
