About this opportunity
The City of Boston Public Works Department is requesting sealed bids for one new self-loading tow truck per specification 477487, with bids due September 23, 2026 at 12:00 PM and public opening immediately following at City Hall.
The procurement is subject to the City of Boston Truck Side Guard Ordinance, which mandates that all motor vehicles over 10,000 pounds must be equipped with side guards, convex mirrors, cross-over mirrors, and blind-spot awareness safety decals prior to commencing work on contracts starting on or after May 5, 2015. Side guards must be rigidly mounted with the lowest edge no higher than 21.5 inches above ground and the upper edge no lower than 14 inches below the vehicle structure. Vehicles require pre-work inspection and Massachusetts state inspection sticker prior to delivery. This is a compliance gate for all bidders.
The truck specification requires a gasoline engine with automatic transmission, 145-inch wheelbase, 4x4 capability, oxford white paint, and a Vulcan self-loader model #812 or equivalent with remote control operation. Additional equipment includes a Whelen light bar with LED strobes, wireless tow lights, backup camera, stainless steel body, spray-on bed liner, anodized dollies, and in-cab remote switches. Bidders must submit detailed manufacturer literature keyed to each specification item and complete a compliance checklist; written explanations are required for any non-conforming items. Approved equals are acceptable with clear deviation notation.
Delivery is required within 120 days from purchase order award to Central Fleet Management at 400 Frontage Road; delivery must be coordinated by appointment. The contract term is one year. Warranty must cover 100% parts and labor at no cost, including pickup and delivery for warranty repairs and factory recalls, with three-year coverage for all allied equipment against faulty workmanship and materials. Certified City of Boston Central Fleet Management technicians performing warranty work must receive reimbursement at specified rates.
The City will award to the lowest responsive and responsible bidder. All bids must include the CM-16 Wage Theft Prevention Form and CM-06 Certificate of Authority if applicable. Inquiries should be directed to Chris Radcliffe at 617-635-3422 or Christopher.radcliffe@boston.gov. No contract value is stated; the award is subject to Mayor approval and availability of appropriation.
