About this opportunity
The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) is requesting sealed bids for replacement of two timber railroad bridges with steel open-deck structures on steel piles and precast abutments, with bids due October 21, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Pacific, and a mandatory pre-bid meeting and site visit on September 30, 2026 at noon.
The scope encompasses design and construction of replacement bridges at Basalt Creek (MP 29.31) and San Antonio Slough (MP 31.74) on SMART's active Mainline right-of-way in Sonoma and Marin counties. The new bridges exceed the length of existing structures and will be installed behind existing abutments and headwalls, which remain in place. The contractor must maintain railroad operations throughout the project, with SMART providing one authorized weekend shutdown for bridge-deck installation. Environmental restrictions require work to start no earlier than September 1 and mandate completion of all in-water work by October 15. Substantial completion is due November 30, 2027, with full completion by December 31, 2027.
The engineer's estimate is $1.65 million to $1.9 million, funded through Federal Transit Administration Section 5337 State of Good Repair grants and SMART Measure Q local funds. Contractors must be qualified, experienced, and licensed for railroad bridge construction in an active operating environment with strict environmental and scheduling constraints. RSVP is required for the pre-bid meeting and site visit.

The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) is a Special District within the State of California that owns, maintains, and operates passenger rail service in Sonoma County and Marin County. In addition to passenger rail service, SMART is a common carrier that owns and operates freight rail services within Sonoma County, Marin County, and Napa County. SMART is seeking Sealed Bids from qualified, experienced, and licensed contractors to replace two existing timber railroad bridges (Basalt Creek MP 29.31 and San Antonio Slough MP 31.74) with steel open deck bridges on steel piles and precast abutments and wingwalls. The replacement bridges are longer than the existing bridges and are to be installed behind existing abutments and headwalls, which are to remain in place. Both of these railroad bridges are located on SMART's Mainline and on active railroad right-of-way. Besides this authorized shutdown, continued railroad operations is critical throughout the duration of the project. There are strict environmental limitations on the work schedule with this project. Contractor shall achieve Substantial Completion of the project by November 30, 2027 and full project completion no later than December 31, 2027. SMART will be hosting a Pre-Bid Meeting and Site Visit for Bidders on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at noon to review the project and physically see the project site and current conditions. RSVP is required to attend. The Engineer's Estimate for this project is $1,650,000 to $1,900,000 and is funded using Federal Transit Administration 5337 State of Good Repair Funds and SMART Measure Q Local Funds.
