About this opportunity
The City of Coronado is requesting bids for the Downtown Enhancements Phase 1 project under Contract No. 27-CO-EN-1206, with bids due November 12, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. via PlanetBids. A non-mandatory pre-bid conference is scheduled for October 21, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at City Council Chambers.
The scope encompasses replacement and addition of street furnishings along Orange Avenue sidewalks on both sides from First Avenue to R.H. Dana Place (excluding the 800 block). Work includes removal and replacement of declining or missing trees, refurbishing and replacement of tree grates, installation of new trash and recycling receptacles, benches, bike racks, isolated sidewalk replacement, and repainting of existing news racks. The City will purchase and store certain equipment (benches, trash and recycling receptacles) and manage up to seven separate deliveries as needed; the supplier coordinates timing with the contractor.
The City Engineer's estimate is $1,252,500. Contract time is 80 working days. Liquidated damages are assessed at $1,500 per day for failure to meet the completion deadline.
The successful bidder must hold a current California Class A contractor's license and comply with Labor Code Section 1771.1(a) public works registration. Prevailing wage rates established by the California Director of Industrial Relations apply. Performance and payment bonds are each required at 100% of contract price. Bid security of 10% (submitted as a bid bond) is required. General liability insurance of at least $2,000,000 per occurrence and $4,000,000 aggregate is required, along with automobile liability coverage of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate, with the City listed as additional insured. A 5% retention will be held from each progress payment. The project lies largely within Caltrans right-of-way and requires an encroachment permit, expected to be issued prior to construction. Questions are due October 28, 2026 by 2:00 p.m., with responses posted by November 4. Award is anticipated within 60 days of bid opening. Hard copy bid documents are available from the Public Services & Engineering Department for a non-refundable $65 fee per set.
