About this opportunity

The City of South Gate Public Works Department is requesting sealed bids for Citywide Residential Resurfacing – Phase V, a comprehensive street resurfacing and related improvements project, with bids due August 27, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. and a non-mandatory pre-bid conference scheduled for August 18, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. via Zoom. Bidders must hold a current California Class A General Engineering Contractor license and Department of Industrial Relations registration for public works — core eligibility requirements. Prevailing wage rates as determined by the State of California apply to all workers.

The scope encompasses cold milling of existing asphalt pavement (13,110 square yards at 1.5 inches and 5,560 square yards at 2 inches), placement of 1,700 tons of rubber hot-mix asphalt, application of 3,460 tons of slurry seal with crack sealing and weed abatement, localized pavement dig-outs (190 cubic yards), installation of one speed hump, pavement striping and markings (over 19,000 linear feet), traffic-detection loops (17 units), adjustment of utility covers to grade (51 units), full-depth pavement reconstruction on Firestone Boulevard and Dearborn Avenue (1,830 square feet), curb and gutter improvements (40 linear feet), drainage improvements, sidewalk installation (1,500 square feet), driveway approaches (330 square feet), tree removal (1 unit), and concrete gutter replacement (60 square feet). Mobilization, demobilization, clearing and grubbing, traffic control, NPDES compliance, construction surveying, and staking are included in applicable bid item prices without separate compensation.

The contract duration is 50 working days with liquidated damages of $2,000 per calendar day for work incomplete beyond the authorized time. Bid security of not less than 10 percent of the total bid amount is required; the successful contractor must provide performance and payment bonds each equal to 100 percent of estimated contract cost and liability insurance with combined single limits of $1,000,000. Questions must be posted through the PlanetBids portal by 4:00 p.m. on August 17, 2026. The City will select the lowest responsible bidder based on evaluation of general competency and past performance of three comparable projects of similar magnitude.
