About this opportunity
The National Science Foundation's National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) is soliciting applications for research on the science and technology enterprise, with a January 19, 2027 application due date.
Eligible applicants include institutions of higher education (two- and four-year accredited institutions with US campuses), non-profit non-academic organizations directly associated with educational or research activities (independent museums, observatories, research laboratories, professional societies), and federally recognized Tribal Nations. For doctoral dissertation research improvement grants, the eligible applicant must be a doctoral degree-granting institution, with the dissertation advisor serving as Principal Investigator and the student as co-Principal Investigator. When proposals include funding to international branch campuses of US institutions, applicants must justify why activities cannot be performed at the US campus and explain the project benefit of performance at the international location.
NCSES welcomes proposals for individual or multi-investigator research projects, doctoral dissertation improvement awards, conferences, experimental research, survey research and data collection, and dissemination projects. Priority areas include conducting research on the S&T enterprise using NCSES or other data; developing improved survey methodologies; exploring alternate data sources to supplement NCSES data; creating and improving indicators of S&T activities and resources; strengthening methodologies to analyze S&T statistical data; and exploring innovative ways to communicate S&T statistics. The program aims to enhance support for analytic and methodological research supporting NCSES surveys and promote education and training of researchers in using large-scale nationally representative datasets.
The opportunity is assigned to NSF's Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences program (CFDA 47.075).

The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) of the National Science Foundation (NSF) is one of the thirteen principal federal statistical agencies within the United States. It is responsible for the collection, acquisition, analysis, reporting and dissemination of objective, statistical data related to the science and technology (S & T) enterprise in the United States and other nations that is relevant and useful to practitioners, researchers, policymakers and the public. NCSES uses this information to prepare a number of statistical data reports including Women, Minorities and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering and the National Science Board's biennial report, Science and Engineering (S & E) Indicators. The Center would like to enhance its efforts to support analytic and methodological research in support of its surveys as well as promote the education and training of researchers in the use of large-scale nationally representative datasets. NCSES welcomes efforts by the research community to use NCSES or other data to conduct research on the S & T enterprise, develop improved survey methodologies that could benefit NCSES surveys, explore alternate data sources that could supplement NCSES data, create and improve indicators of S & T activities and resources, strengthen methodologies to analyze S & T statistical data, and explore innovative ways to communicate S & T statistics. To that end, NCSES invites proposals for individual or multi-investigator research projects, doctoral dissertation improvement awards, conferences, experimental research, survey research and data collection, and dissemination projects under its program for Research on the Science and Technology Enterprise: Indicators, Statistics, and Methods (NCSES S & T).
