About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research is soliciting applications for the NIDCR Small Grant Program for New Investigators (R03) to fund pilot, feasibility, and developmental research in oral, dental, and craniofacial health, with an application due date of January 7, 2028. Clinical trials are not allowed under this program.

Eligible applicants include for-profit organizations, small businesses, higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, tribal organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), special district governments, public or Indian housing authorities, and independent school districts. Additional eligible applicant types include historically black colleges and universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander serving institutions, tribally controlled colleges and universities, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, U.S. territories or possessions, and eligible federal agencies. Non-domestic entities and foreign organizations are not eligible; foreign components of U.S. organizations are permitted.

The program targets scientists in early stages of establishing an independent research career and is designed to generate sufficient preliminary data to support a subsequent R01 or equivalent investigator-initiated Research Project Grant application. Awards are granted under CFDA 93.121 (Oral Diseases and Disorders Research). The primary evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and significance, investigator competency, innovation and novelty, technical adequacy of experimental design, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, and relevance to NIDCR program objectives. Applications undergo two-level review: initial review by extramural peer scientists, followed by secondary review by the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council.
