About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders is soliciting applications for Research Grants translating basic research into clinical practice targeting communication disorders, with applications due October 12, 2027. This R01 Clinical Trial Optional mechanism is open to a broad applicant base including higher education institutions (public and private), tribal governments (federally and non-federally recognized), tribal organizations, small businesses, nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations, city, county, state, and township governments, special district governments, public or Indian housing authorities, independent school districts, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, U.S. territories, eligible federal agencies, faith-based or community-based organizations, regional organizations, and foreign organizations.
The program prioritizes translational research projects jointly initiated and conducted by basic scientists and clinicians that convert basic research findings into clinical tools for diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of communication disorders. Projects must establish clear connection to the clinical condition and demonstrate practical clinical impact. Evaluation criteria assess scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of environment and resources, necessity of budget components, program objective relevance, innovation, and risk to human subjects including inclusion of minorities and across the lifespan. For clinical trial applications, commercial potential is evaluated.
This opportunity is assigned CFDA 93.173 (Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders). The parent program has awarded 12,532 total grants since 1974, with recent annual volume of 99 to 280 awards. Recent NIDCD-funded awards in communication disorders range from $76,656 to $2.39 million, reflecting project scope variation.
