About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for development of neuromodulation and neurostimulation devices for mental health treatment, with applications due January 7, 2028. The program does not permit clinical trial components in funded projects.

Eligible applicants include small businesses, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, state and local governments, tribal organizations and governments, public and private higher education institutions, housing authorities, school districts, faith-based and community-based organizations, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, AANAPISIs, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, TCCUs, U.S. territories, and non-domestic entities.

Applications must propose either development of novel brain stimulation devices that move beyond existing electrical or magnetic stimulation techniques to achieve increased spatiotemporal precision and multi-focal closed-loop capability, or significant enhancement of FDA-approved or cleared devices through hardware or software improvements focused on spatial resolution, depth of delivery, and precision. Incremental changes including routine software updates fall outside the scope.

Projects receive support for periods up to five years. Applications are evaluated on scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance by peer review panels; non-fellowship applications are also reviewed by the National Advisory Mental Health Council. Funding decisions consider technical merit as determined by peer review, fund availability, and relevance to program priorities.

Awards are issued under CFDA 93.242 (Mental Health Research Grants) administered by the National Institute of Mental Health. Applicants follow standard NIH grant application procedures using required FORMS-I research application instructions and general submission guidelines.

Synopsis

The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to encourage applications seeking to develop the next generation of brain stimulation devices for treating mental health disorders. Applications are sought that will either 1) develop novel brain stimulation devices or 2) significantly enhance, by means of hardware/software improvements, the effectiveness of brain stimulation devices that are currently U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved or cleared. Novel devices should move beyond existing electrical/magnetic stimulation and develop new stimulation techniques capable of increased spatiotemporal precision as well as multi-focal, closed-loop approaches. Applications seeking to develop new capabilities should focus on significant enhancement of the spatial resolution, depth of delivery, and/or precision of the device. Incremental changes to existing devices (e.g., software updates) are not withinthe scope of this announcement.

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
