About this opportunity

The National Endowment for the Arts is soliciting applications for International Indemnity coverage under the Arts and Artifacts Indemnity Program, with a March 8, 2027 application due date.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, state and local governments, federally recognized tribal governments, and higher education institutions (both public and private). The program provides federal indemnification against loss or damage to artworks and artifacts borrowed from abroad for exhibition in the United States or borrowed from the U.S. for exhibition abroad, backed by the full faith and credit of the United States. No cost share is required.

The Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities makes final award decisions based on recommendations from consulting panels of field professionals. Application-to-notification timelines vary depending on Federal Council meeting schedules. Applicants must maintain complete packing, shipping, security, and condition reports for all indemnified items for 90 days beyond the indemnity period's end. Requests for extensions and renewals must compete against new applications in subsequent rounds.

The Indemnity Program (CFDA 45.201) was created by Congress in 1975 to minimize insurance costs for international exhibitions. Four FY2027 opportunities are currently open: two International Indemnity tracks due September 14, 2026 and March 8, 2027; two Domestic Indemnity tracks due December 7, 2026 and June 7, 2027. All were posted June 26, 2026. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the Indemnity Administrator prior to application and must consult guidelines at arts.gov.
