About this opportunity

The National Endowment for the Arts is accepting applications for the Arts and Artifacts International Indemnity Program, with an application due date of September 14, 2026. This program provides federal indemnification coverage (backed by the full faith and credit of the United States) for eligible artworks and artifacts involved in temporary exhibitions that move cultural property between the United States and foreign nations.

Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, city and township governments, county governments, state governments, special district governments, higher education institutions (both public and private), independent school districts, and federally recognized tribal governments. Applicants should consult the Indemnity Administrator prior to submitting applications and must review the Arts and Artifacts Indemnity Guidelines available at arts.gov.

The program covers two primary scenarios: works of art and artifacts borrowed from abroad for exhibition in the United States, and works of art and artifacts borrowed from the United States for exhibition abroad, preferably when there is an exchange. Indemnitees are responsible for complete packing, shipping, security, and condition reports on all indemnified items, which must be retained for 90 days beyond the indemnity period end date.

The Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities makes final funding decisions based on recommendations from consulting panels of professionals in the field. The timeline between application and notification depends on deadline dates and Federal Council meetings. Requests for extensions and renewals must compete against new applications. The program operates under CFDA 45.201.
