About this opportunity

The National Endowment for the Arts is soliciting applications for domestic indemnity coverage of eligible artworks and artifacts on loan for temporary exhibitions within the United States, with an application due date of June 7, 2027.

Eligible applicants are city and township governments, state governments, county governments, special district governments, federally recognized tribal governments, independent school districts, 501(c)(3) nonprofits, and both public and private higher education institutions. The program covers U.S.-owned works of art and artifacts exhibited domestically and is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States; in the event of loss or damage, the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities must certify claims and request Congressional authorization for payment.

This is one of two domestic indemnity tracks open in FY2027 (the first closed December 7, 2026). The Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities makes final award decisions based on recommendations from consulting panels of field professionals. The timeline between application and notification depends on Federal Council meeting schedules; applicants must consult guidelines at arts.gov and are strongly encouraged to contact the Indemnity Administrator prior to application.

Applicants are responsible for packing, shipping, security, and condition reports on all indemnified items, which must be maintained for 90 days beyond the indemnity period's end. Requests for extensions and renewals compete against new applications in subsequent rounds.

The program is assigned CFDA 45.201 (Arts and Artifacts Indemnity).
