About this opportunity

The Department of Justice Bureau of Prisons is making a non-competitive award under a cooperative agreement to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for custody death reduction implementation plan development, with an application due date of June 12, 2026.

This is a notice of intent to award without full competition. The funding flows through the Corrections Training and Staff Development program (CFDA 16.601), which supports development and delivery of training initiatives to enhance professional capabilities of correctional personnel and other criminal justice professionals.

Award amounts under this program have historically ranged from $75,000 to $275,000 for 12-month project periods, with potential for multi-year extensions. Recent opportunities have offered typical awards between $100,000 and $250,000 for 12-month performance periods. No cost share or matching requirement applies.

Eligible applicants include states, general units of local government, public and private agencies, educational institutions, organizations, and individuals involved in the development, implementation, or operation of correctional programs and services. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, a local government entity operating a correctional custody system, meets this eligibility standard.

Recipients must submit proposals on Standard Form 424—Federal Assistance and are subject to full fiscal and program audits at project closeout, on-site inspections as needed throughout the agreement period, and must maintain complete records on federal fund receipt and disposition for at least three years following submission of the final financial report. Funds must be spent within 90 days after the agreement ending date. The National Institute of Corrections administers this program and handles appeals.
