About this opportunity
The National Institute of Mental Health seeks applications for research projects testing strategies to increase the reach, efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of digital mental health interventions, with an application deadline of January 7, 2028. This R01 grant opportunity requires applicants to conduct statistically powered clinical trials as a mandatory component of the research design.
Eligible applicants include for-profit organizations, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, small businesses, institutions of higher education (public and private), state and tribal governments (federally recognized and other), city and county governments, special district governments, independent school districts, public and Indian housing authorities, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, and non-domestic entities.
Applicants must develop digital health test beds that leverage well-established digital mental health platforms to rapidly refine and optimize existing evidence-based digital health interventions. The program funds research that conducts definitive clinical trials regarding intervention effectiveness across diverse populations and service delivery contexts.
The project period extends up to five years with no renewal option. Awards are evaluated on technical merit through scientific peer review, program relevance, and program balance. Support is provided under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242). Standard NIH audit requirements apply; for-profit organizations expending $500,000 or more in HHS awards during a fiscal year are subject to financial-related audit requirements. Records must be retained at least three years, or longer if audit findings remain unresolved.
