About this opportunity

The National Science Foundation is soliciting applications for the Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) Program with an application due date of March 25, 2027. Eligible applicants are limited to Institutions of Higher Education (two- and four-year IHEs including community colleges accredited and located in the U.S.), non-profit non-academic organizations directly associated with educational or research activities, and federally recognized Tribal Nations. If a proposal includes funding for an international branch campus of a U.S. IHE, the applicant must explain the benefit to the project and justify why activities cannot be performed at the U.S. campus.

IGE funds development and implementation of bold, transformative approaches to STEM graduate education. Proposals must either explore ways for graduate students in STEM master's and doctoral programs to develop skills, knowledge, and competencies for diverse STEM careers, or support research on the graduate education system and outcomes of systemic interventions and policies. Projects pilot, test, and validate novel models or examine systemic innovations with potential to enrich knowledge on effective graduate education approaches, addressing workforce development with emphasis on broad participation and institutional capacity-building. Strategic collaborations with the private sector, NGOs, government agencies, national laboratories, field stations, teaching and learning centers, informal science organizations, and academic partners are encouraged.

The program is funded under CFDA 47.076, STEM Education, within NSF's broader education and human resources portfolio. Applications are submitted via Grants.gov and must comply with NSF application requirements including SF 424 (R&R) forms, biographical sketches, data management plans, and mentoring plans where applicable.

The program supports piloting, testing, and validating novel models or activities and examining systemic innovations with high potential to enrich and extend the knowledge base on effective graduate education approaches.
