About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health, specifically the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), is soliciting applications for Focused Technology Research and Development (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) grants, with applications due January 7, 2028.
This NOFO supports projects focused solely on developing technologies with potential to enable acquisition of biomedical knowledge. Proposed outcomes or products must significantly advance the current state of the art and be sufficiently characterized for application in addressing a broad range of biomedical research questions. Projects are justified in terms of technical innovation and utility for impacting future biomedical research.
Eligible applicants include public or private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, tribal governments (federally recognized), tribal organizations (not federally recognized), state and local governments, small businesses, public or Indian housing authorities, and independent school districts. Other eligible applicants include Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, faith-based or community-based organizations, eligible federal agencies, regional organizations, and U.S. territories or possessions. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities and non-U.S. components of U.S. organizations are not eligible; however, foreign components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are allowed.
This opportunity operates under CFDA 93.859 (Biomedical Research and Research Training). Award sizes and numbers of awards are determined as part of each NOFO. NIGMS does not publish a formal payline but considers scientific merit alongside portfolio breadth, investigator career stage, at-risk status, and existing funding. The Institute prioritizes funding meritorious investigators with limited other support and generally does not award more than one NIGMS R01 to a single principal investigator.
