About this opportunity

The National Institutes of Health is soliciting applications for Exploratory Grants in Cancer Control (R21 Clinical Trial Optional) with a September 7, 2028 application due date. This mechanism supports early-stage, novel research on cancer control through behavior modification, screening, etiologic investigation, and cancer prevention strategies with potential for substantial population-based impact.

Eligible applicants include public and private higher education institutions, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations (federally and non-federally recognized), special district governments, independent school districts, Indian Housing Authorities, faith-based and community-based organizations, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, regional organizations, non-domestic entities, and U.S. territories and possessions.

The R21 mechanism prioritizes novel scientific ideas, techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications in epidemiologic, biomedical, behavioral, health care delivery, or clinical research domains. Research scope spans cancer control across the prevention and control continuum, emphasizing hypothesis development and methods development through implementation studies.

Applications are evaluated on scientific merit and general significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, facility and resource adequacy, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives. All competitive applications compete for available funds on the basis of scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance consistent with NCI and NIH priorities and strategic plans.

The opportunity is assigned to Cancer Cause and Prevention Research (CFDA 93.393) and Cancer Control (CFDA 93.399) grant programs administered by the National Cancer Institute.

Synopsis

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages the submission of exploratory/developmental research grant (R21) applications that focus on different aspects of cancer control by modifying behavior, screening, and understanding etiologic factors contributing to the development of cancer, and developing ways to control cancer. The overarching goal is to provide support to promote the early and conceptual stages of research efforts on novel scientific ideas that have the potential to substantially advance population-based cancer research, such as the development of novel techniques, agents, methodologies, models, or applications that could have a major impact on a field of cancer research (epidemiologic, biomedical, behavioral, health care delivery or clinical).

Eligibility

Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
