About this opportunity
The National Institute of Mental Health is seeking applications for clinical trial research projects to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic and service delivery interventions for post-acute management of mental health conditions in youth, adults, and older adults, with applications due January 7, 2028.
NIMH requires applications to propose definitive effectiveness trials statistically powered to provide a definitive answer regarding study intervention effectiveness. The NOFO encourages clinical trials testing post-acute phase interventions—those focused on consolidating and maintaining gains from initial treatment, managing residual symptoms or impairment, preventing relapse, or promoting adherence and appropriate service use—matched to stage of illness and population need. A companion R34 mechanism supports pilot effectiveness trials evaluating feasibility, tolerability, acceptability, safety, and preliminary indications of effectiveness.
Eligible applicants include public and Indian housing authorities, for-profit organizations, county and city/township governments, federally recognized and other tribal governments and organizations, 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, public and private higher education institutions, small businesses, independent school districts, special district governments, state governments, and other categories. Additional eligible applicants include Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, eligible federal agencies, non-U.S. entities, and U.S. territories or possessions.
The funding is provided under CFDA 93.242 (Mental Health Research Grants). The NOFO assigns applications to standard NIH peer review for scientific and technical merit, with additional review by the National Advisory Mental Health Council. Award decisions reflect technical merit, fund availability, and program relevance and balance. Projects are supported for periods not exceeding five years. Applicants must follow FORMS-I instructions and research-specific application requirements identified in the Application Guide.
Synopsis
NIMH seeks applications for research projects to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic and service delivery interventions for the post-acute management of mental health conditions affecting youth, adults, and older adults. This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) encourages clinical trials to establish the effectiveness and test hypotheses regarding moderators, mediators, and mechanisms of action of post-acute phase therapeutic and services interventions that are matched to the stage of illness in terms of both their focus (e.g., consolidating and maintaining gains from initial treatment, managing residual symptoms/impairment, preventing relapse, promoting adherence and appropriate service use) and intensity/burden for promoting optimal longer-term outcomes. This NOFO is intended to support effectiveness trials testing post-acute phase interventions that are statistically powered to provide a definitive answer regarding the study intervention's effectiveness. Support for pilot effectiveness trials to evaluate the initial feasibility, tolerability, acceptability, safety and preliminary indications of effectiveness of post-acute phase intervention approaches is provided via a companion R34 (Currently TEMP-24814)
Eligibility
Other Eligible Applicants include the following: Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions; Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISISs); Eligible Agencies of the Federal Government; Faith-based or Community-based Organizations; Hispanic-serving Institutions; Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs); Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized); Non-domestic (non-U.S.) Entities (Foreign Organizations); Regional Organizations; Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs) ; U.S. Territory or Possession.
