About this opportunity

The National Science Foundation is soliciting applications for the Combinatorics program, a grant opportunity supporting research on discrete structures, with an application due date of September 22, 2026. Applicants are unrestricted by category. The program funds algebraic, enumerative, existential, extremal, geometric, and probabilistic combinatorics, including graph theory. Conference proposals are eligible and must be submitted at least six months in advance of the conference event, submitted in the same fiscal year (beginning October 1) if possible. Principal Investigators proposing conferences, workshops, summer or winter schools, and similar activities must review the separate program solicitation "Conferences and Workshops in the Mathematical Sciences" for substantive proposal guidance. The Combinatorics program operates under CFDA 47.049 (Mathematical and Physical Sciences) within the NSF Division of Mathematical Sciences. Applications must comply with NSF's standard submission requirements, including data management and sharing plans, biographical sketches via SciENcv, current and pending support documentation, and project narratives not exceeding 15 pages. All attachments must be submitted in PDF format. Applicants should submit applications at least five business days before the deadline to allow time for addressing compliance errors. Organizations must register with NSF's Research.gov Account Management system and obtain NSF IDs for the Authorized Representative and all Project Directors or Principal Investigators before submission.

Synopsis

The Combinatorics program supports research on discrete structures and includes algebraic, enumerative, existential, extremal, geometric, and probabilistic combinatorics, including graph theory. Conferences Principal Investigators should carefully read the program solicitation "Conferences and Workshops in the Mathematical Sciences" (link below) to obtain important information regarding the substance of proposals for conferences, workshops, summer/winter schools, and similar activities. Conference proposals must be submitted at least six months in advance of the conference, and in the same fiscal year (which begins October 1) if possible.
