About this opportunity
The National Endowment for the Humanities is soliciting applications for Collections Stewardship grants to preserve and provide access to physical and digital humanities collections, with an application deadline of December 15, 2026.
Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, accredited institutions of higher education (public or private), state and local governments, and federally recognized Native American Tribal governments. Cost sharing is not required.
NEH anticipates awarding approximately $14 million across both application deadlines (May 11 and December 15, 2026) to approximately 50 recipients. Award amounts range from $50,000 to $500,000 across three funding levels: Level 1 Planning projects ($50,000–$100,000), Level 2 Implementation projects ($100,001–$350,000), and Level 3 Implementation projects involving multiple organizations ($350,001–$500,000). NEH expects approximately two Level 3 awards per deadline.
The period of performance extends up to three years, starting between November 1, 2027, and February 1, 2028, for December deadline applicants. Eligible activities include conservation assessments and treatment, digitization and description, archival processing, cataloging, rehousing and preventive care, transcription and indexing, enhancement of long-standing digital resources, and preservation education and training. Restricted activities include DEI/DEIA initiatives, political or religious promotion, environmental justice activities, K-12 lesson plan creation, tuition remission, acquisition of collections, digitization of U.S. newspapers, construction or capital improvements, and activities outside the humanities.
Applications undergo peer review by subject-matter experts based on project significance to humanities scholarship and engagement, soundness of proposed activities and adherence to professional standards, sustainability and outreach plans, staff qualifications, and budget reasonableness. Award notifications are anticipated in July 2027. The assistance listing is 45.037.
