About this opportunity

The National Science Foundation seeks applicants for research grants in Chemical Oceanography with an application due date of August 16, 2027. The program is unrestricted in eligible applicant types and carries no mandatory cost share requirement.

The Chemical Oceanography Program supports basic research into the chemistry of the oceans and the role of the oceans in global geochemical cycles. Areas of interest include chemical composition, speciation, and transformation; chemical exchanges between the oceans and other components of the Earth system; internal cycling in oceans, seas, and estuaries; and the use of measured chemical distributions as indicators of physical, biological, and geological processes. The program also supports research into material inputs to and outputs from marine waters, orthochemical and biological production and transformation of chemical compounds and phases within the marine system, reaction rates, and equilibria. The program encourages research into the chemistry, distribution, and fate of inorganic and organic substances introduced into or produced within marine environments, including those from estuarine waters to the deep sea.

This opportunity is funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which operates through the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences. Project Grants comprise the primary funding instrument within this assistance listing. Recent awards in the broader Geosciences portfolio typically range from $24 thousand to $775 thousand, with several exceeding $500 thousand.

Update #1 ·

The Chemical Oceanography Program supports research into the chemical components, reaction mechanisms, and geochemical pathways within the ocean and at its interfaces with the solid earth and the atmosphere. Major emphases include: studies of material inputs to and outputs from marine waters; orthochemical and biological production and transformation of chemical compounds and phases within the marine system; and the determination of reaction rates and study of equilibria. The Program encourages research into the chemistry, distribution, and fate of inorganic and organic substances introduced into or produced within marine environments including those from estuarine waters to the deep sea.
