The National Science Foundation's Cellular and Biochemical Engineering (CBE) program is seeking proposals for fundamental engineering research that advances the understanding of cellular and biomolecular processes in engineering biology. The program supports research that leads to the development of enabling technology for advanced biomanufacturing, with a focus on areas such as metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, quantitative systems biotechnology, cell culture technologies, protein and enzyme engineering, and single cell dynamics. Proposals should address the novelty and potentially transformative nature of the proposed work, as well as its importance in terms of engineering science and potential impact on society or industry. Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) program proposals are strongly encouraged. The typical award size for the program is around $100,000 per year, with allowance for up to $200,000 per year for collaborative projects involving multiple institutions. The duration of unsolicited awards is generally one to three years. Proposals requesting a substantially higher amount than this, without prior consultation with the Program Director, may be returned without review.
