About this opportunity
The National Institutes of Health (NHLBI) is soliciting applications to validate transformative, multi-use platforms or technologies that enable advances in early detection, screening, model development, clinical diagnosis, treatment, control, behavior, prevention, or epidemiology for heart, lung, blood, and sleep (HLBS) diseases and disorders, with applications due December 23, 2027. Clinical trials are not permitted under this R33 mechanism.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), for-profit and nonprofit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments (federally recognized and other), faith-based and community-based organizations, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving institutions, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian serving institutions, AANAPISIs, TCCUs, U.S. territories or possessions, and eligible federal agencies. Non-domestic (non-U.S.) entities are not eligible to apply as primary applicants, though foreign components of U.S. organizations and non-domestic components as defined in the NIH Grants Policy Statement are permitted.
The source does not specify award ceiling, award floor, expected number of awards, or period of performance. Proposed platforms and technologies must have widespread applicability and demonstrably improve the outlook for HLBS-related diseases and disorders. The program goal encompasses supporting transition of basic science discoveries into viable diagnostic and therapeutic candidates cleared for human testing and developing translational researchers fluent in product development and entrepreneurship.
This opportunity is funded through four parent grant programs: CFDA 93.837 (Cardiovascular Diseases Research), CFDA 93.838 (Lung Diseases Research), CFDA 93.839 (Blood Diseases and Resources Research), and CFDA 93.233 (National Center on Sleep Disorders Research). Applications are evaluated by an appropriate initial review group (study section) and receive final secondary review by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Advisory Council. Evaluation criteria include scientific merit and significance, technical adequacy of experimental design, investigator competency, adequacy of facilities and resources, budget necessity, and relevance to program objectives.
Synopsis
The goal of the NHLBI Catalyze Program is to provide a comprehensive suite of support and services to facilitate the transition of basic science discoveries into viable diagnostic and therapeutic candidates that have been cleared for human testing, and to develop translational researchers fluent in product development and entrepreneurship. This specific Catalyze Enabling Technologies and Transformative Platforms initiative will support needed to rigorously validate transformative, multi-use platforms or technologies that can enable. Well-suited applications must offer the potential to significantly accelerate and/or transform the areas of early detection and screening, model development, clinical diagnosis, treatment, control, behavior, prevention or epidemiology. Proposed platforms and technologies may have widespread applicability but must be able to improve the outlook for HLBS-related diseases and disorders.
