About this opportunity
The National Cancer Institute seeks applications for investigator-initiated clinical trials reducing cancer burden through improvements in early detection, screening, prevention and interception, healthcare delivery, quality of life, and survivorship, with applications due January 7, 2027. This NOFO does not support clinical trials for cancer diagnosis or oncologic therapy in patients.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3) nonprofits, for-profit organizations, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal organizations (federally recognized and not federally recognized), county governments, special district governments, independent school districts, public or Indian housing authorities, and faith-based or community-based organizations. Other eligible applicants include Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions, Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions, HBCUs, Hispanic-serving Institutions, Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities, regional organizations, U.S. territories or possessions, and eligible federal agencies. Non-domestic entities are also eligible.
Proposed projects must meet the NIH definition of a clinical trial and relate to the programmatic interests of the NCI Division of Cancer Prevention and/or the NCI Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences. Applications are evaluated on scientific and technical merit, competency of the investigator or group, adequacy of facilities and resources, necessity of budget components, and relevance to program objectives. Scientific peer review is followed by review by the National Cancer Advisory Board. All competitive applications compete on the basis of scientific and technical merit, program relevance, and program balance consistent with NCI and NIH priorities.
The assistance listings are 93.393 (Cancer Cause and Prevention Research) and 93.399 (Cancer Control). This is an R01 Clinical Trial Required mechanism. The program funds research across the continuum from hypothesis development through implementation, with emphasis on cancer prevention and control interventions in defined populations and systematic application through dissemination and diffusion strategies.

This NOFO does not and will not support clinical trials for studies of cancer diagnosis and/or oncologic therapy in patients.
