About this opportunity
The National Science Foundation seeks applicants for the Archaeology Program Senior Research Awards, a grant funding basic anthropologically relevant archaeological research with an application due date of December 1, 2026. Principal Investigators and co-PIs must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent education and experience sufficient to carry out independent basic research; while undergraduate and graduate students may be included in research projects, they cannot serve as PI, co-PI, or other senior or key personnel.
The program supports research designed to increase understanding of past behaviors justified within an anthropological context. The investigator bears responsibility for explaining convincingly why the proposed research is significant and has the potential to contribute to anthropological knowledge. The program sets no priorities by geographic region, time period, theoretical orientation, or research question. Most funded proposals request support for either field research or analysis of archaeological material through multiple approaches.
Eligible applicant types are classified as "Other" under NSF eligibility categories. The program operates under Assistance Listing 47.075 (Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences) within the Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences. Applications must conform to NSF 24-006 (Grants.gov Application Guide effective May 20, 2024), including a 15-page Project Narrative limit, two-page Data Management and Sharing Plan, and application submission through Research.gov for collaborative applications or through Grants.gov for standard submissions. Organizations must maintain current SAM registrations with active Unique Entity Identifiers; all PIs, co-PIs, and Authorized Representatives must establish NSF accounts prior to submission. NSF recommends initiating submissions at least five business days before the deadline to allow time for addressing compliance errors.
Synopsis
The Archaeology Program supports anthropologically relevant archaeological research to increase understanding of past behaviors. This means that the value of the proposed research can be justified within an anthropological context. It is the responsibility of the investigator to explain convincingly why the focus of their research is significant and has the potential to contribute to anthropological knowledge. The program sets no priorities by either geographic region or time period. It also has no priorities in regard to theoretical orientation or question. While the program, in order to encourage innovative research, neither limits nor defines specific categories of research, most proposals either request funds for field research or the analysis of archaeological material through multiple approaches.
Eligibility
*Who May Serve as PI: PIs and co-PIs must be researchers who have a Ph.D. or equivalent education and experience, sufficient to allow them to carry out independent basic research. PIs of senior research proposals are encouraged to include undergraduate and graduate students in their research projects, but not as PI/co-PI or other senior/key personnel.
