About this opportunity

The National Science Foundation seeks applicants for grants supporting mathematics research motivated by and contributing to the solution of problems arising in science and engineering, with an application due date of November 16, 2026.

Applicant types are unrestricted. The program supports single investigator and interdisciplinary team projects. Mathematical innovation and breadth and quality of impact on applications are required. Projects providing rigorous mathematical training of junior applied mathematicians through research involvement are encouraged.

Conference and workshop proposals follow different submission timelines within this program. Proposals for conferences or workshops held in the United States must be submitted 8 months in advance of the conference date. Proposals to support group travel to meetings outside the United States must be submitted 12 months in advance of the meeting date. Proposals for conferences, workshops, or similar activities with budget requests exceeding $50,000 must be submitted during the annual November submission window. Applicants proposing conferences should consult the separate program solicitation "Conferences and Workshops in the Mathematical Sciences" for detailed requirements.

Applications must comply with NSF's standard submission requirements as detailed in the NSF Grants.gov Application Guide (NSF 24-006), including mandatory forms (SF 424 R&R, Research and Related Budget, NSF Cover Page, NSF Senior/Key Person Profile Expanded) submitted in PDF format with specified font, spacing, and margin standards. Organizations must register with NSF via Research.gov Account Management; all administrators, Authorized Representatives, PIs, and co-PIs must establish NSF accounts with organization-approved roles. Budget justification is limited to five pages; senior and key personnel salary compensation is limited to no more than two months of regular salary per year unless specifically approved by NSF in the award notice. Applications should be initiated at least five business days before the deadline to allow adequate time for compliance corrections and resubmissions.

The program falls under CFDA 47.049 (Mathematical and Physical Sciences), with the Division of Mathematical Sciences as the administering unit within NSF.

Synopsis

The Applied Mathematics program supports mathematics research motivated by and contributing to the solution of problems arising in science and engineering. Successful proposals must demonstrate mathematical innovation, as well as breadth and quality of impact on applications. Projects that additionally provide opportunities for rigorous mathematical training of junior applied mathematicians through their involvement in research are encouraged. The proposals considered by the Applied Mathematics program may range from single investigator to interdisciplinary team projects. Conferences Proposals to the Applied Mathematics program for conferences or workshops should be submitted through the program solicitation "Conferences and Workshops in the Mathematical Sciences" (link below). Principal Investigators should carefully read the program solicitation to obtain important information regarding the substance of proposals for conferences, workshops, summer/winter schools, and similar activities. To facilitate timely notification of the availability of support:

  • Proposals for conferences, workshops, etc., to be held in the US must be submitted 8 months in advance of the conference date;
  • Proposals to support group travel to meetings outside the US must be submitted 12 months in advance of the meeting date;
  • Proposals for conferences, workshops, etc., whose budget request exceeds $50,000 must be submitted during the annual November submission window.
