About this forecast

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is seeking to procure an Olympus Inverted Phase Contrast Microscope with up to 100X magnification to enhance laboratory capacity for detecting Campylobacter in shellfish. The primary objective is to update the current Bacteriological Analytical Manual (BAM) method for identifying morphology and motility, with potential secondary use in microalgae culture research. The estimated solicitation release date is May 1, 2026, with an anticipated contract award date of July 1, 2026.

The contract falls under the Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing NAICS code 334516, and will be managed by the Department of Health and Human Services Food and Drug Administration. The primary point of contact is Laquia Geathers (laquia.geathers@fda.hhs.gov), who can provide additional details about the procurement. While specific budget ranges are not disclosed, the forecast indicates this is a new requirement with no specific set-aside, suggesting the procurement will be competitively bid among qualified manufacturers of laboratory microscopy equipment.

Forecast text

Olympus Inverted Phase Contrast Microscope, up to 100X magnification in response to increasing Campylobacter illnesses from oyster consumption, new equipment is needed to establish laboratory capacity at GCSL to develop a method to detect Campylobacter in shellfish. The current BAM method uses a phase contrast microscope to identify morphology and motility, and this will be needed to update the current method. If CHSB begins to work with microalgae culture, this microscope would also be suitable for that work. HFP Priority #505
