About this forecast

The US Geological Survey's Petroleum Geochemistry Research Lab is seeking a definitive contract for a new HAWK Programmed Pyrolysis Instrument to replace existing equipment that is 15 years old and approaching end-of-life. The instrument is critical for conducting geochemistry research supporting energy resource assessments, with the capability to run over 3,000 sample analyses annually to evaluate hydrocarbon-generating potential and thermal maturity of source rocks. The solicitation is estimated to be released on August 1, 2025, with an anticipated award date of September 30, 2025.

The estimated award value ranges from $250,000 to $499,000, with a current fiscal year projected obligation of $350,000. The purchase includes the instrument, computer, and software necessary for the lab's operations. Work will be performed in Denver, Colorado, with a period of performance from September 30, 2025, through December 30, 2025. Interested parties should contact Sean Jones, Contracting Officer at the US Geological Survey, via email at smjones@usgs.gov or by phone at 303-236-9314.

Definitive Contract for new HAWK Programmed Pyrolysis Instrument

The Petroleum Geochemistry Research Lab;PGRL; Project conducts geochemistry research in support of energy resource assessments. The current HAWK programmed pyrolysis instrument is 15 years old and is near end-of-life. Although this instrument could last for another few years; it is possible that irreplaceable parts could fail at any moment. The HAWK provides critical data for energy resource assessments; over 3;000 sample analysis are run annually and are an invaluable screening tool to evaluate hydrocarbon-generating potential and thermal maturity of prospective source rocks. The HAWK quantifies the abundance of the various types of organic material present in a sample; which is critical to constrain the petroleum-generating potential of source rocks. The purchase price includes a computer and instrument software. Geochemistry data from the instrument are used by projects that work in support of Executive and Secretary’s Orders EO 14153; EO14154; EO14156; SO3417; SO3418; SO3422 focused on achieving American energy dominance.
