About this opportunity
The Air Force Research Laboratory is seeking sources for one RSX-1 Sodium Iodide Radiation Detector, with responses due by August 7, 2026 at 12:00 PM Eastern Time. This is a Sources Sought notice, not a formal solicitation, and does not obligate the Government to award a contract or reimburse response preparation costs. No set-aside applies.
The detector will be procured on behalf of the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Health (USAFSAM/OEC) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to create a networked two-unit sensor system capable of triangulating and pinpointing radiation sources with directional accuracy for Health Risk Assessments protecting Air Force personnel from ionizing radiation exposure.
The RSX-1 model and exact dimensions (4 inches × 4 inches × 16 inches) are mandatory for interoperability with existing equipment; no substitutes are acceptable. The detector must feature a Thallium-activated Sodium Iodide scintillation crystal with a minimum active volume of 4.0 liters and energy resolution below 8.5%, a detection range from 20 keV to 3.0 MeV, and a fully linearized 1024-channel energy spectrum with automatic multi-peak gain stabilization. Signal processing must utilize an internally integrated Advanced Digital Spectrometer capable of handling up to 250,000 counts per second with effectively zero dead-time under typical conditions and less than 20% dead-time at maximum saturation. The ruggedized, weather-sealed enclosure must not exceed 750 mm × 170 mm × 180 mm and weigh no more than 25 kg. The system must operate continuously from −30°C to +45°C, be compatible with 9–40 VDC vehicle/aircraft power, and consume no more than 6 watts during normal operation. Deliverables include the complete detector assembly, manufacturer calibration certificates and quality assurance/resolution test results, and integration documentation with mechanical interface drawings and digital interface cables (Ethernet/USB/Serial as applicable).
Interested parties must submit responses electronically to michael.hornberger.1@us.af.mil with subject line "RSX-1," including company name, CAGE code, address, point of contact, phone and email, small business status category, and description of relevant capability and experience per the Draft Minimum Requirements Document.
