About this opportunity

The Department of Energy's Office of Science issued a Request for Information on Scientifically Relevant Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing Systems with responses due June 9, 2026. This is a voluntary market research solicitation for strategic planning purposes only and does not constitute a commitment to award a contract.

DOE seeks input from organizations interested in contributing hardware and/or software to a potential future solicitation. Respondents should address six key areas: feasibility of achieving 150–250 logical qubits, universal instruction capability, and a logical error rate of 10-8 per quantum operation by 2028; hardware and software solution architecture including quantum register characteristics, fault-tolerant logic design, software environment, and site requirements; scientific applications addressing DOE mission needs in chemistry, materials science, plasma physics, and high energy physics; non-recurring engineering activities that could accelerate delivery or reduce costs; system advancements anticipated through the early-to-mid 2030s; and cost estimates and partnership structure recommendations, including consideration of prize challenges and other transaction authorities.

Responses must not exceed 20 pages and should be submitted electronically to QCInput@science.doe.gov with "Scientifically Relevant FTQC Systems" in the subject line. Proprietary or confidential information must be clearly marked in accordance with specified procedures.
