About this opportunity

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), part of the Department of the Interior, has issued a special notice of intent to award a sole-source purchase order for specialized geological services. The agency plans to contract with Geosep Services, LLC of Moscow, Idaho, for mineral separation of apatite and zircon from bulk bedrock samples and zircon U-Pb dating using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). This procurement falls under NAICS code 541380 (Testing Laboratories and Services) and will be conducted according to Federal Acquisition Regulation procedures for commercial items and simplified acquisition procedures. The USGS maintains that Geosep Services is the only known vendor capable of providing both mineral separation and LA-ICP-MS services. The notice serves to satisfy regulatory requirements while allowing other qualified parties to demonstrate their capabilities.

The primary objective is to support geological research in the Kuskokwim mountains region of southwest Alaska, focusing on understanding the geologic setting of critical mineral resources through isotopic analysis. Interested contractors must submit technical capability statements exclusively via email to eadam@usgs.gov by 6:00 AM ET on Monday, August 18, 2025, with no other submission methods accepted. Responses must demonstrate specific expertise in mineral separation techniques including crushing, magnetic separation, and gravimetric separation, as well as the ability to perform minimally destructive U-Th-Pb isotopic analysis. The work involves processing rock samples up to 5 kg, separating minerals into labeled vials, analyzing 20-30 zircon grains per sample, and providing comprehensive analytical data including raw measurements, standardized results, calculated dates, and associated uncertainties. This is not a request for competitive quotes, and the government reserves sole discretion in determining whether to compete the procurement based on received responses.
