C. Project Description:

The Chincoteague Bay Channel is located in Accomack County, Virginia in the town of Greenbackville. An approach channel 6 feet deep and 60 feet wide from that depth in Chincoteague Bay to an L-shaped harbor of the same depth, 60 feet wide and 1500 feet long at Greenbackville, Virginia. The dredging work consists of dredging to a required depth of 6 feet; one additional foot of paid overdepth dredging will be allowed. It is estimated that approximately 9,900 cubic yards of maintenance dredged material, to include allowable overdepth, will be removed. All dredging depths are referenced to Mean Lower Low Water. Hydraulic pipeline dredging will be required to complete the project. Dredged material will be placed into a government furnished upland site adjacent to the federal navigation channel. In accordance with the plans and specifications, the Contractor will be responsible to insure all portions of the placement area, dikes, drainage piping and spillbox are adequate and in proper working order before commencement of dredging operations. The catwalk access, spillbox weirboards and effluent pipeline are in disrepair and will require rehabilitation/replacement. The current spillbox's outfall pipeline is 24" ID Corrugated Metal Pipe (CMP). The replacement design is to sleeve a smaller 18" ID high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline through existing CMP and attach at spillbox with a new flange or face-plate. Placement area maintenance shall include excavation, backfill and compaction of animal burrows along dike system, removing woody debris from inside upland area with offsite disposal and clearing phragmites inside upland area in preparation of maintenance dredging.
