Remove and replace approximately 3,370 feet of existing wood post and steel W-beam guardrail system along the access road and dam crest at Union Village Dam.
Properly dispose of existing guardrail and wood posts.
The post holes from guardrail removal will need to be backfilled with gravel so holes will not pose a safety hazard.
The new W-beam galvanized guardrail systems shall include rail elements and fittings, line posts, offset blocks, end post with anchorages, terminal and end sections, and all necessary hardware. Unless otherwise noted, guardrail system shall be a single faced barrier.
2. Location

A major phase of work is defined as an operation involving a type of work presenting hazards not experienced in previous operations or where a new subcontractor or work crew is to perform the work. The analysis shall define all activities to be performed, identify the sequence of work, the specific hazards anticipated, and the control measures to be implemented to eliminate or reduce each hazard to an acceptable level. Work shall not proceed on a phase of work until the AHAs have been accepted by the GDA. A preparatory meeting shall be conducted by the prime contractor to discuss the Modified AHA’s contents with all effected onsite employees. The Modified AHA shall be continuously reviewed and revised to address changing site conditions as appropriate. The AHA’s shall interface with the Contractor's overall safety and health program.

Extend cleaning and feather into the edges of adjacent undamaged galvanizing. Use a power sanding disk per SSPC-SP3. For bolts use a thorough hand wire brushing and SP1 cleaning as a minimum.
After thorough cleaning paint damaged areas, in two to four coats to a thickness equivalent to the surrounding galvanizing, with an organic zinc-rich repair paint containing 92 percent (minimum) zinc by weight in the dry film, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Silver paint, brite paint, or aluminum paint is not acceptable.
Wherever guardrail panels are nested, and the surfaces on both panels will be in contact with each other, shall be coated with grease rustproofing compound meeting the requirements of VTrans Subsection 708.04.
