Service Base – Dredge Potter

Rubber Compensators and Jet Hose for Dredge Potter

December 2018

Scope of Work

General The work to be done by the Contractor under these specifications consist of furnishing and delivering, in accordance with the drawings and specifications, furnish and deliver (2) rubber compensators, furnish and deliver (1) jet hose, and proper disposal of (1) rubber compensator located at the Service Base.

The (2) rubber compensators are to be sized 32” ID X 35.3” OD X 20 1/8” OAL. These rubber compensators must be designed for discharge service for 145 PSI working pressure – abrasion and cut resistant black gum rubber blend tube. 1” thick – reinforced with multiple plies of high tensile strength cord – smooth, abrasion, UV and oil resistant Neoprene cover – each end to have a heavy duty duck and rubber flange (~2” contractor to field verify) with an integral steel faceplate and a carbon steel custom drilled backup ring vulcanized to the flange. Drill pattern on each end to be 1111 mm OD (43.75”) x 1016 mm PCD (40”) with 36 – 35 mm bolt holes (1.375”). Contractor to field verify final size and measurements to ensure proper fit. Exact item being replicated is located at the St. Louis Service Base.

The work to be done by the Contractor under these specifications consist of furnishing and delivering, in accordance with the drawings and specifications, one section of 16-inch I.D. dredge jet hose with Contractor-furnished flange nipples. The dredge jet hose with flanged nipples shall conform to the specifications and drawing No. SK-1182, See Attachment 2. The drawing shows the overall dimensions of the hose, nipples, the hose-nipple assembly, and the bending requirements of the jet hose under operating conditions.

The jet hose shall be made with one ply of breaker on the tube which shall not be included in the number of plies specified. Additional plies of fabric may be molded in the ends extended over the built-in nipples. The ends shall be capped with rubber of the same quality as tube and cover, and to conform to the level of the edge of the build-in nipples.

Contractor shall remove the (1) existing rubber compensator location on the Service Base and properly dispose.

This compensator is used pasts it’s expected life span and is no longer serviceable. Full coordination must occur with the Government.

Conditions of Operations The hose will be used on hydraulic pipeline dredge operating on the Mississippi River. The dredge jet pumps a mixture of water and solid material, requiring the hose to be abrasion resistant and resistant to the attack of the elements. The mixture usually contains 13% to 18% solids. The solid material is generally composed of 5% silt or clay, 8.5% fine to coarse sand, and 10% gravel ranging in size from ¼ inch to 2-½ inches. In addition, tree roots and branches and alluvial debris are occasionally pumped as part of the mixture. During operation, the velocity in the 16-inch jet hose will approximately 18 feet per second.

Due to the conditions under which dredging work is carried on; the dredge may be idle for periods of up to six months and in operation for period of eight months.

Rubber Compensator:

The 32-inch compensators shall be capable of operating with an internal pressure of approximately 145 pounds per square inch without any appreciable visible distortion in its cross-sectional area.

Jet Hose:

The 16-inch I.D. jet hose will be used in the discharge system of centrifugal pump with 16 – inch discharge furnishing water for water jets on the dredge suction head. The 16- inch jet hose shall give satisfactory service through a deflection of 3 degrees greater than the deflection shown on the plan with a normal internal pressure of 35 pounds per square inch and a maximum internal pressure of 60 pounds per square inch, and at no part of the deflection shall the hose section be distorted. The hose material area exposed to the sun shall not dry rot nor affected by ultra violet action from the sun.

Fabrication Rubber Compensator Specifications:

1. The jet hose shall consist of an inner tube of abrasion resistant rubber, a layer of polyester fabric, a helix of steel wire with rubber filling between coils, liner or second layer of rubber; layers of polyester duck fabric and an outer rubber covering. The inner tube and outer covering shall be smooth, free from pitting, blisters or other defects, and of uniform thickness. Contractor must ensure that the items are US

Made.

2. The compensators shall have integral flanges vulcanized to the rubber at each end, and furnished by the contractor. The polyester fabric shall be made of thoroughly cleaned polyester, free from waste, evenly woven without sizing, free from imperfections of manufacture and blemishes affecting the appearance or serviceability.

3. The fabric shall be applied on a bias of 45 degrees and with the edges lapped approximately ½”, but not sewn. The fabric shall be fully saturated with rubber compound and laid with a distinct layer of rubber between piles.

4. The metal reinforcing helix wire for the suction hose shall be bright, round steel. The helixes shall be continuous, without breaks, and shall be of uniform diameter and pitch throughout their entire length.

The helix shall extend over the tail piece of the nipple and shall terminate not less than one full turn beyond the last retained bead. The wire shall be of sufficient size, strength, and stiffness to ensure that the hose will perform in a completely satisfactory manner under the conditions specified above.

5. The rubber material used in the fabrication of the hose shall be in accordance with Federal Test Method

Standard No. 601 for “Rubber: Sampling and Testing”. The inner tube and outer covering shall be smooth, free from pitting, blisters, or other defects, and of uniform thickness. The strips shall be of such thickness that the outside of the hose will not show appreciable corrugations.

6. As part of the friction test, the rate of separation of plies of fabric and of fabric and rubber shall not exceed 1 inch per minute.

7. Each hose shall have one inlaid braid approximately midway from one end containing the manufacturer’s name, trade mark, date, and contract number.

Jet Hose Specifications:

The 16” I.D. jet hose shall have an integral flanged nipple vulcanized to the rubber, furnished by the Contractor, built into each end.

2. The inside diameter of the jet hose shall be made flush with the inside diameter of the nipple liners. The

16” jet hose shall have clamps fitted to each end or have built-in clamps or binding with no outside clamps.

3. The dredge jet hose, as shown on drawing SK-1182, shall be 16” I.D. The free length of the hose shall be 11’9” and the overall length shall be 14’9” with tolerances as shown on the drawing.

4. The rubber material used in the fabrication of the hose shall be in accordance with Federal Test Method
