Questions and Government Answers:
1. In regard to the conventional total station with a Carlson data collector: Although I can get a Carlson Data collector with software, I am wondering if you are open to using a Trimble data collector instead. The total station that I am considering for the bid is the Trimble C3 but the C5 actually comes with Trimble Access on board if you would rather use it that way so there are no cable or Bluetooth connections to have to mess around with. We also have similar Nikon total stations.
Government Answer: While we appreciate other data collectors, as well as onboard data collection capabilities, we are specifically interested in a Carlson data collector with software. If they have total station manufacturers that work seamlessly with Carlson and meet the other specifications, we'd appreciate receiving a proposal.
2. In regard to the 3D Terrestrial Laser Scanning System, we have a few of units that would likely fit your need, but do not match your spec. The first is a Trimble SX10 which is a combination of a 1” robotic total station and a 3D laser scanner. If your guys know how to use a Trimble Robot with Trimble Access, I can have them using this unit in about 10 minutes. The beauty of this is that there is no registration required since everything is scanned from a survey setup. The range isn’t quite as long as your spec, but it requires much less work to get to a final product because there is no registration at the end. You can also save time with this scanner because every scan does not have to be a 360° scan. The user chooses exactly what he wants to scan. In addition to this, he can incorporate total station measurements as well as photogrammetry all from one unit.
If you can are looking for a faster scanner and can sacrifice range, you may want to look at the Trimble TX8 3D laser scanner. This unit can capture one million points per second and the accuracy is 1mm or 2mm across its entire range of up to 340 meters depending on the setting that is selected. Another choice in scanners is the TX6 which can scan up to 120 meters at a rate of 500,000 points per second still maintaining the 1mm or 2mm accuracy.
Government Answer: We are interested in the total station and 3D laser scanner being totally separate units so they can be used at different sites at the same time. I would, however, be interested in reviewing the white paper for the TX8. After reviewing said white paper to see how it compares in other areas besides distance capabilities, it will be determined if we'd be interested in receiving a proposal for it.
