C-2.2 CASTINGS.

C-2.2.1 The structure of the metal in the castings shall be homogeneous and free from excessive nonmetallic inclusions and slag (metal oxides). Excessive segregation of impurities or alloys at critical points in a casting will be cause for its rejection.

C-2.2.2 Unless otherwise specified on the contract drawings, the dimensions for the thickness of the cast finished surfaces shall not deviate from the drawings in an amount that would cause more than a 10% change in the strength of the casting. In addition, deviations from the overall dimensions of the cast finished surfaces shall not exceed the recommended tolerances of the Steel Founder’s Society of America, Supplement 3, tolerance grade T5. Warped or distorted castings, or castings that are oversize to an extent that will interfere with proper fit with other parts of the assembly will be rejected.

C-2.2.3 After castings have been cleaned, and before any machining is done on them, they shall be inspected by dye penetrant or magnetic particle test by the Contractor in the presence of the Government Inspector, or contractor in-house quality control personnel (Note: the contractor can hire a qualified inspection company to perform the inspection; all cost for this service shall be included in the total cost of the contract). If any discrepancies exist, the Contractor shall promptly notify the Contracting Officer in writing. Weld repair of moderate harness castings will be allowed provided that cracks, inclusions do not exceed 10% (ten percent) of the total wall or component thickness. If the crack or surface defect exceeds 10%, the Contractor must request permission from the Government to perform weld repair. All cracks shall be gouged to completely remove crack, non-destructively test to insure the crack has been completely removed, and then weld repaired. Excessive number of porosity/inclusion (more than 20% of any planar surface area) on castings will be cause for rejection. The contractor shall document and provide the Government with a sketch of all weld repairs performed. If necessary, provide preheat or post heat treatment for all weld repairs. Inclusion or porosity in excess of 1/16 inch in diameter and 1/16 inch depth will not be allowed, as well as excessive discontinuities which make up more than 10% of any planar surface. If magnetic particle test is used, castings shall be demagnetized after testing is completed.

C-2.3 Dimension and Machine Finished Surfaces. Dimensions of castings shown on the contract drawings are final dimensions. All machine finished dimensions, sizes, and surface finishes shall be in strict accordance with the drawings referenced in paragraph C-1. Unless otherwise specified to the drawings, tolerances for dimensions of machine finished surfaces shall be +/- (plus or minus) 1/64 inch and machine finished surfaces shall not have a roughness height rating (RHR) greater than 250 micro-inches as defined in ANSI B46.1.

C-2.4 Final Dimensional Inspection. After completion, but prior to processing, each item will be checked in the presence of the Government Inspector, or contractor in-house quality control personnel (Note: the contractor can hire a qualified inspection company to perform the inspection; all cost for this service shall be included in the total cost of the contract) to verify dimensions, and compliance with these specifications and Contract drawings. Coordinate with C.2.2.3.

C-2.5 Test Reports. The Contractor shall furnish certified analysis of the chemical composition as well as the mechanical properties of the materials (see C-2.1) for all castings furnished under this contract. Each test report shall be identified by Government contract number, heat number and pieces poured from the heat. Written certification shall be furnished that stated that all castings needing heat treatment, were heat treated in accordance with applicable specifications.

C-2.6 Impeller Balancing. Pump impellers shall be statically balanced to within one pound at the periphery. Balancing is to be conducted in the presence of the Government or contractor in-house quality control personnel (Note: the contractor can hire a qualified inspection company to perform the inspection; all cost for this service shall be included in the total cost of the contract), prior to delivery to the Government. Once balanced, no other repairs or modifications such as welding, machining, or grinding shall be made without re-balancing upon completion.

The Contractor shall provide the balancing mandrel(s) to be used to achieve the impeller’s balance.

C-2 WELDING. All welding performed under this contract shall be in accordance with applicable requirements of the American Welding Society and in accordance with recommendations of the manufacturer of the material used. Welding shall be performed by AWS certified welders. Welding electrodes used throughout the work shall be suitable for use with parent metals, and have physical properties equal to or better than parent metals.

C-3 DRILLED HOLES. No drill templates will be furnished under this contract for drilling pipes flanges. The Contractor shall carefully layout and drill all holes as shown on contract drawings. The finished machined surface of all pipe flanges shall be per contract drawings.

Also, machine (all bolt holes washer surface area in the back of all flanges) counter bores to 1/8” deep and 250 micro-inches finish. The Contractor shall leave scribe marks, layout lines, etc., on each flange until completion of final dimensional inspection.

C-6 SPECIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS. Where articles, materials, and equipment are required to conform to standard specifications or tests of Government or other authorities, such as, Military Specifications, Federal Specifications, United Coast Guard Regulations, American Bureau of Shipping rules, American National Standard Institute, American Society for Testing and Materials, etc., they will conform to the latest edition, including amendments thereto, in effect unless otherwise specified on contract drawings or in this specifications.
