The government has a requirement to provide the CCAD with Carbon Face Seals. The Carbon Face Seal is used to seal the oil lubricant within the gearbox and protect it from leaking out at the point where the shaft enters and exits the gearbox, most aircraft gearboxes use face seals. The Carbon Face Seals contain a carbon-graphite stationary ring and a silicon carbide or tungsten carbide rotating ring. The rings that make the dynamic face seal are both lapped flat and are held together with springs or magnets so that liquids cannot flow between the ring faces even though they are spinning against each other at high rpm. The Carbon Face Seals are manufactured with the front face closed in which prevents leakage.

CCAD had a , which analyzed multiple Carbon Face Seals by conducting various repeatability testing. Only one (1) Carbon Face Seal had a 100% pass ability rating, which is manufactured by

These are the only Carbon Face Seals that are enclosed at the top and bottom, which prevents leaks from occurring. This allows for greater longevity of the Carbon Face Seals. Other Carbon Face Seals are only enclosed at the bottom and leak more frequently, which requires replacement on a regular basis. Some Carbon Face Seals can only be utilized a few times before leakage occurs. Procuring a different Carbon Face Seal would require the Government to incur additional expenses by maintaining a larger stock of Carbon Face Seals.
