Description of Requirement Mechanical Testing Equipment and Installation

BACKGROUND:

The US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL), Concrete and Materials Branch (CMB) performs mechanical testing on cements/pozzolans on a regular basis to support civil and military projects throughout GSL. The laboratory’s current machine has become obsolete and damaged beyond repair.

SPECIFICATIONS:

1. New Equipment for Tinius Olsen 400-kip Universal Testing Machine (UTM)

1.1. 3,000 psi Hydraulic Pump - The Concrete & Materials Branch (CMB) of the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, MS, currently owns a Tinius Olsen 400-kip universal testing machine (UTM). This UTM is currently being operated by the original hydraulic pump which has become expensively inoperable due to several hydraulic leaks and problems with the belt-driven motor system. The control system has also become obsolete and is no longer supported by the manufacturer. A new hydraulic pump is required to interface with the existing UTM. This pump should have a fully-enclosed reservoir with tabletop work surface. New hydraulic hoses and fittings should be provided to connect to the existing UTM.

1.2. Controller Electronics – The current UTM has outdated Instron brand controller electronics that are no longer serviceable. A new controller is required to interface between the pump and allow for the use of Instron brand Partner software to operate the UTM. This controller should have the following capabilities:

1.2.1. Closed-loop control and data acquisition

1.2.2. Connect to primary load and actuator extension devices

1.2.3. Expansion slots for sensor conditioner cards (QTY:3), analog out and digital I/O card (QTY:1), secondary digital input (QTY: 1)

1.2.4. Sensor conditioner card for strain conditioning (0-10 VDC output devices)

1.2.5. Integrate with existing crosshead motor

1.3. Computer/Software – A new computer is being requested with a minimum of 2GB RAM and 250GB hard drive. The new computer will have the most current version of Instron brand Partner software (requiring a software update). A flat panel LCD monitor will also be required (minimum of 22-in.). This computer will interface through the controller electronics to operate the UTM.

1.4. Circumferential Extensometer for Concrete/Rock – Measures up to 0.25-in displacements on specimens ranging from 1.25-6 inches in diameter. Additional sensor conditioner card is required to operate this device.

ASTM Verifications – Verifications should be performed on load, displacement, and strain channels (including 0-10% range) after equipment installation.

2. Backlash Eliminator Package for Baldwin 440-kip Universal Testing Machine (UTM) The Concrete & Materials Branch (CMB) of the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, MS, currently owns a Baldwin 440-kip universal testing machine (UTM). This UTM has a backlash eliminator system that has been worn beyond its service life. This system is currently at risk of binding and rendering the machine inoperable. A new backlash eliminator system needs to be installed including the following new parts: backlash eliminator nuts, backlash drive worm gears, elevator shaft assembly.

ASTM Verifications – Verifications should be performed on load and displacement channels after equipment installation.

3. Instron Model 600DX Compression Only Testing Machine The Concrete & Materials Branch (CMB) of the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, MS, requires a new testing machine for the cement/pozzolan laboratory to replace an obsolete testing machine that has been damaged beyond repair. Requirements and accessories for this new testing machine are listed below:

3.1. Instron Model 600DX – 135,000 lb capacity required in compression only, includes hydraulic pump.

3.2. Actuator Position Measuring Device

3.3. Integrated Controller Electronics

3.3.1. Closed-loop control and data acquisition

3.3.2. Connect to primary load and actuator extension devices

3.3.3. Expansion slots for sensor conditioner cards (QTY:3), analog out and digital I/O card (QTY:1), secondary digital input (QTY: 1)

3.3.4. Sensor conditioner card for strain conditioning (0-10 VDC output devices)

3.4. A new computer is being requested with a minimum of 2GB RAM and 250GB hard drive. The new computer will have the most current version of Instron’s Partner software including the Partner compression/flexural suite. A flat panel LCD monitor will also be required (minimum of 22-in.). This computer will interface through the controller electronics to operate the UTM.

3.5. T-Slot Bases for Upper/Lower Flexure Supports

3.6. Center Pivot for Flexure Testing of Brittle Materials

3.7. Compression Platens

3.7.1. Spherically seated – 3.125-in diameter

3.7.2. Plane – 4.5-in diameter

3.7.3. Plane – for 2-in concrete cubes

3.7.4. Spacer – 2.9-in diameter, 8-in long

3.8. Axial Averaging Extensometer

3.9. ASTM Verifications – Verifications should be performed on load, displacement, and strain channels (including 0-10% range) after equipment installation.

4. Installation

Installation of all new equipment will be performed by the contractor.
